Eeeeee! I was imagining THIS SAME SCENARIO as the ending for S07 (when I wasn’t imagining Cas dying…). Like, it was part of Cas’ redemption? They stopped the leviathans but the ‘price’ was Sam and Dean’s memory of him. And Cas didn’t WANT to do it at first, and maybe Sam and Dean themselves were saying ‘no, you can’t Cas, don’t do this to us, don’t do this to you!’ And maybe the night before Dean was punching him and shouting ‘I won’t! I won’t forget you, you bastard!’ - kinda like Buffy in that episode of Angel where Angel is human but he turns back time and she is going to forget, yeah?

Only Cas DOES do it, because he honestly believes it’s the best thing for all of them. And maybe he’s not in the mirror, maybe he lets Dean brush his shoulder as he and Sam walk to the car because he know it will be the last contact they share. And Dean frowns at him and says ‘watch it!’ and Cas says ‘I’m sorry.’ Then Dean squints and says ‘hey, do I know you?’ And Cas shrugs and shakes his head - ‘no, no I don’t think so.’ So Dean and Sam move on and Cas watches them leave with a bittersweet smile and a whispered ‘goodbye, Dean.’
